    Emergency Shelter Services

Provided by: Guidance Center of Lea County, Inc.

    Program Description

Parent/child problems that have escalated to the point where there is a potential for physical abuse, where the child is asked to leave the home or refuses to return home, require immediate, short-term intervention. Humphrey House has found that an environmental change may be the most prudent and non-disruptive method of defusing this high-risk parent/child conflict. Short-term Care can be used as a crisis intervention technique that increases resources and can allow the individuals to reinstate coping skills that worked before being overwhelmed and to learn new coping skills. Short-term Shelter Care is a more cost efficient way to provide this service than hospitalization or residential care. It can also be used as a place and time to evaluate needed level of care while providing family members with a cooling off period. Humphrey House will not use short-term care as temporary respite care. It will be used as a preventative tool that allows the clinical staff to assess a problematic family situation and to introduce coping strategies designed to improve the family’s ability to function independently.
