Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence.
The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
In essence, social studies promotes knowledge of and involvement in civic affairs. And because civic issues—such as health care, crime, and foreign policy—are multidisciplinary in nature, understanding these issues and developing resolutions to them require multidisciplinary education. These characteristics are the key defining aspects of social studies.
Hobbs Municipals Schools will follow the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework to improve the rigor of instruction in Civics, Economics, Geography, and History.
Our intention is to use Social Studies to promote the following:
• Social studies as a way to promote the nation’s young people for college, careers, and civic life.
• Using Inquiry at the heart of social studies instruction.
• Applying Social studies to promote interdisciplinary applications and welcome the integration of the arts and humanities.
• Social studies courses will be composed of deep and enduring understandings, concepts, and skills from all disciplines. Social studies emphasizes skills and practices as preparation for democratic decision-making.
• Social studies education should have direct and explicit connections to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
