Recently, Hobbs High School/CTECH SkillsUSA Chapter Members and Advisors joined the City of Hobbs Parks and Open Spaces Department to begin the Rigs to Roots Tree Project! One pine tree was planted at Hobbs City Park near Murray Elementary, and the second pine tree was planted at Jefferson Park near Jefferson Elementary School.
From Rigs to Roots was created to redefine Hobbs beyond its identity as an oil and gas town, proving that its greatest strength lies in its people. For decades, Hobbs has been shaped by the rise and fall of the oil economy, with its prosperity tied to drilling production. While the industry remains vital, our SkillsUSA chapter wanted to create a lasting initiative that honors our city’s history while building a new legacy of growth and unity. We envisioned a large-scale tree-planting effort that would symbolize transformation, showing that just as oil rigs built our city, the roots we plant today will shape its future.
A total of 18 trees will be planted, with 13 placed at elementary schools to symbolize growth and the role of education in shaping Hobbs’ future. The remaining five will be planted at CTECH. 17 trees represent the SkillsUSA Framework’s 17 Essential Elements, while the final tree at CTECH symbolizes our drive to close the skills gap, as CTECH, our trade school, stands as a testament to that mission.
We had a Sponsor-A-Tree Program to get support from each aspect of the community and also to raise the funds for that.
