The Veteto Foundation made a surprise visit to teacher meetings at five Hobbs schools on April 19 to announce its 2017 winners. They are Southern Heights special education teacher Catherine Brijalba, Frank Estala, a Heizer Social Studies teacher,Murray Bilingual teacher Judith Jaquez, Kelly McKay, a Highland math teacher and Skye Wilson, a Houston science teacher.

Founded in 2006 by the late Burton Veteto and his son, Mark Veteto, the Foundation seeks to reward the city’s unsung heroes.
This year’s winners were feted at a May 2 banquet where Mark Veteto read exceprts from nominating letters. The five members of the Class of 2017 join 50 previous winners of the Veteto Excellence In Teaching Award. Those awards – along with two non-teacher recogonitions the Foundation made over the past 11 years - translate to more than $275,000 in donations to Hobbs school employees.
