New School Zones to be Discussed
Proposed School Zones up for Review

Based on the recommendation of a committee, school officials will discuss this zoning plan (left) at a series of public meetings next week. Current zoning boundaries are shown in the bottom graph.

Hobbs elementary school parents will have three opportunities next week to hear details of proposed boundary changes for existing school districts.
The changes are made necessary by the expected August 2015 opening of Murray Elementary School – which will ease overcrowding at city schools.
A committee made up of citizens and school officials has met four times during the past month to examine options which reduce crowding at the district’s 11 elementary schools, five of which are currently over capacity. After spending hours wrestling with several alternatives, the committee on Monday selected an option which best matches its goal of having students attend schools in their neighborhood and avoids students having to cross major streets to reach school.
currentAnother goal was minimizing the number of students – other than those who will attend Murray – being moved to school zones different from their current assignment, according to HMS Operations Director Gene Strickland.
Details of the proposal – which must be adopted by the Hobbs School Board before it becomes policy  – will be discussed during a series of meetings at the district’s middle schools. The agenda at all meetings will be the same. The district is merely offering parents a choice of dates and locations. Houston will host the first meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, the second meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Heizer and the third meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Highland.
