American Legion Essay Winners Announced

     A total of 692 Hobbs students submitted essays to the American Legion Auxiliary’s annual Americanism Essay Contest.

     “It was the largest number of entries ever,” said Kay Bryan, a member of the Unit 26 Auxiliary and coordinator of the contest.
     After reading through the essays, members chose 55 winners were chosen in grades 3 through 8.
     overallStudents had a chance to read their essays on the theme of “How Can I Show My Pride in Being An American” during a American Legion Auxiliary Unit 26 program on March 3.
   Sarah Mendoza, a College Lane fourth-grader was the overall Level 1 winner; Zarius Duarte, a Highland sixth-grader was the Level II overall winner and Veritas 7th grader Preston Bova was the overall Level III winner. Mendoza and Duarte were each awarded $25 for their essays while Bova earned $50. The overall winners’ essays will be sent to state competition were they will be judged and possibly advance to national competition, Bryan said.
   The following is a list of winners by school and teacher:
   3 and 4 Third Grade: Vanessa Esparza, Will Rogers, Ms. O’Brain; Alyssa Jaramillo and Josue Estrada, Will Rogers, Erin Allen; Cynthia Robles, Edison, Ms. Robinson.
    Fourth Grade: Caris Balboa, Sanger, Mrs. Romine; Layla Lovett, Mills, Mrs. Murphy; Joanne Lane, College Lane, Ms. Williford; Kayla Darling, Stone, Ms. Watts; Sarah Mendoza, College Lane, Mrs. Campbell.
     5 and 6Fifth-grade: Jeremiah Mendez, Will Rogers, Mrs. Holland; Diego Ibarbol, Will Rogers, Ms. Seifert; Emanual Segovia, Will Rogers, Ms. Perez; Kasandra Lopez, Jefferson, Ms. Castillo; Aaron Speake, Jefferson, Mrs. Fortner; Raylie Abney, Coronado, Ms. Gutierrez; Kennadee Mapp, Annece Estrello and Konner Babb, College Lane, Ms. Brumfield.
     Sixth Grade: Naomi Vega, Heizer, Ms. Brady; Jasmine Lopez, Highland, Mr. Siess; Cassie Smith, Tyson Trevino and Bailey Traylor, Houston, Mr. Shed; Cori Parkman, Tom Perry, Chance Harris, Cyl Morgan and Zarius Duarte, Highland, Ms. Wilson.
