District Hires New Finance Director
District Hires New Finance Director
amadorSabrina Amador has been named Director of  Finance for Hobbs Municipal Schools. Amador takes over for Kerri Frizzell, who resigned to become chief financial officer for the J.F Maddox Foundation.
Amador comes to HMS from the City of Hobbs, where she was assistant finance director for the past six years. She holds a master’s degree in accounting from New Mexico State University and said a similarity in dealing with government finances will be a benefit to her in her new position.
There are differences between her current and previous job, however. The school’s $100 million annual budget is smaller than city coffers and more than 90 percent of the school budget is payroll compared to just over 50 percent for the city.
The good news is that the school district recently converted to an accounting software system which has streamlined payroll and payment disbursement operations. The bad news is that schools statewide are facing budget cutbacks and shortfalls. “So  some districts are having to make decisions about foregoing one expense to take on another,” Amador said. “That’s a different picture compared to the city.”
While HMS Superintendent TJ Parks said he regretted the loss of Frizzell, he said the district is fortunate to acquire somebody with Amador’s background and experience.
Amador said she likewise feels lucky to step into a well-organized business office. “They are really established here,” Amador said. “It seems like a really great staff.”
