We are quickly approaching November and will have a chance to give thanks for the blessings and bounty that abounds within each of our lives. Before October ends, however, I’d like to honor a truly special group of employees.

October is School Principal Appreciation Month. School principals have the most complex position within our educational system in America. Our principals are responsible for delivering and overseeing bureaucratic requirements from multiple agencies which include federal, state and local authorities.

Hobbs Municipal Schools has 30 principals and assistant principals who strive to make their campus the best place for students to receive an education. The goal of HMS principals is to develop and maintain a campus climate that is inviting, safe and comfortable for all students. As I see first-hand the opportunities our students have on a daily basis, I often am exposed to the efforts and interaction of our building principals. Principals develop relationships with students that are productive and accountable. For some of our students, the relationship might be with the most influential adult relationship in their lives. Many students look to the principal to be a positive role model and set a standard of excellence, Principals - who often known the names and even the siblings of their entire student boy -  often develop lifelong relationships with students. How many of us have introduced  our own children to the person who was their school principal?

Principals work diligently to maintain healthy relationships with parents and guardians of the children that attend their school. For some, the conversation with a principal may be difficult but the administrator is there to support parents through difficult circumstances and help students find success.

In addition, principals often act is a staff counselor to encourage employee growth. In addition, our principals help in telling the story of the events and happenings on their campus through the various social media and messaging tools deployed. They love to tell others about the successes happening on their campus and with their students.

Each of the 30 principals is a unique individual that desires to make life better for those they are given care of.  The leadership our principals displayed when school closed in March 2020, through the multiple and various models of instruction that continue today is humbling at least and heroic on many levels. Our principals are truly heroes each and every day. They meet countless needs without a second thought -  all while making our world a better place, one day at a time.

Will you join me in honoring the Hobbs Municipal Schools principals? They most certainly are a TREAT!
